They were better 5+ years ago, before they went complete noob friendly.
Go here now, press this now, look at this explosion now. They may aswell make the whole campaign a cut scene. I havent played a SP FPS since Half life 2 because ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz

Depends. There are some awesome single players, but for SP I'm not particularly biased towards FPS. The better campaigns seem to come from RPGs/TPS. Mass Effect 3 had a fantastic single player (so did ME2), GTA IV / V has a great one, The Witcher is awesome, Skyrim...
